Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of the seminar participants will be able to:

  • Define bullying and understand its similarities and differences with other forms of aggression.
  • Become familiar with Georgia's law on bullying, intimidation and harassment (1999 and 2010).
  • Understand the various roles that children, youth and adults may play in instances of bullying.
  • Describe best practices to communicate and intervene with youth who bully, youth who are bullied, and youth who witness bullying.
  • Describe Perceptual Control Theory and how it relates with bullying and adult role modeling.

About the presenter
Michael R. Carpenter, PhD is a Student Assistance Consultant who has worked in drug and violence prevention in Atlanta, Georgia for the last thirty years.  He is a past consultant with Georgia’s Departments of Education and Human Resources who has worked with private/public schools throughout the United States and internationally in Japan, New Zealand, Belize and Mexico.  He also is a Nationally Certified Bullying Prevention Program trainer offering workshops and on-going training for managers, educators, parents, students, and community leaders.  He has trained more than seventy Bullying Prevention Program Coordinating Committees and has worked for the Illinois Board of Education for five years.  Dr. Carpenter is founder of the Student Assistance Professionals Association (SAPA) of Georgia; Cobb County School’s Prevention Intervention Center; Synergistic Living, a communications company; International Bullying Prevention Best Practice Conference; and board member of the International Bullying Prevention Association (IBPA).  He has authored Waging Peace, and Setting the Tone (soon to be published).

Continuing Education Credit

Licensed Clinical Social Workers, Licensed Professional Counselors: Applications have been made for 5 professional education hours in accordance with the guidelines established by the Georgia Composite Board.

Ethical Decision Making Model in Complex Cases

At the conclusion of the seminar participants will be able to:

  • Practice ethical decision making in complex cases incorporating professional ethics standards and principles, and ethical decision making model and current law.
  • Learn current ethical guidelines and legal issues regarding duty to warn, confidentiality, HIV reporting, etc.

About the presenter
Dr. Graham completed his doctorate degree in clinical psychology from Georgia State University in 1994.  In graduate school, he was awarded the John Warkenton Scholarship for “outstanding potential in psychotherapy.” Since completing his degree, he has maintained a private practice in Atlanta working with individuals, couples, families and groups.  Dr. Graham also served as Clinical Director for a community mental health agency serving NW Georgia.  Additionally, he worked at Georgia State University Counseling Center supervising interns and post-doctoral fellows.  He has also presented a variety of educational workshops for agencies in the metro Atlanta area.
